The recent Inglis Easter sale sparked a trip down memory lane, with pages and pedigrees reflecting the success both on and off the track for some of our former fillies and mares.
The catalogue featured ten mares that had been trained by Mick, from a Group 1 winner such as Secret Agenda to mares that didn’t have the same level of success on the track, such as Timeless Choice.
One thing they all have in common is that they retired happy and sound, with a view to making sure they flourished in new careers off the track or in motherhood.
It’s been a successful formula for many former fillies and mares that have come through the stable, highlighted by the recent win of Samaready’s son Shinzo in the Golden Slipper. Samaready was a dual Group 1 winner who has produced a Magic Millions winner (Exhilarates) and a Golden Slipper winner (Shinzo) from just two foals to race.
Some of the other familiar, Stakes-producing mares to have called the stable home for their careers include:
Estelle Collection – Group One winner Lankan Rupee – Australian Champion Sprinter of his time
Nakaaya – Group 2 winner and dam of Group 1 winners Aristia and Marabi
The Love of Money – dam of Group 1 winner Jungle Magnate
Aloha – Group 1 winner and dam of Group 1 placed Libertini
Vivacious Spirit – dam of Group 1 winner Costa Viva
Personal Ensign – dam of Group 2 winner Fontiton
Orvieto – dam of Group 3 winner Bonvicini
Gallica – Group 1 winner and dam of Group 2 placed Valanetti
Loveyamadly – dam of Stakes winner Immortal Love and I’mlovinya
Snitzel Blitz – dam of Group 3 winner Pinstriped
Kylikwong – dam of Stakes performer Chateau Margaux and grand dam of Alligator Blood
La Bella Dame – dam of Group 3 winner Damselfly and Group 1 placegetter Le Bonsir
Cailin Miss – dam of Group 3 winner La Mexicana
Timeless Choice – dam of Group 2 winner Count De Rupee
Mossirra – dam of Stakes performer Muntaseera
Mefnooda – dam of Stakes performer I am Me
Jazz Song – dam of Stakes performer Sword Point
The last few years have also seen mares retire from the stable and be highly sought after in the sales ring. These include:
Samaready – sold for $1.8 million in 2020 after producing Exhilarates
Quantum Mechanic – sold for $1.2 million in 2022
Oceanex – sold for $1 million in 2022
Night Raid – sold for $700,000 in 2022
Crack the Code – sold for $825,000 in 2022
Seabrook – sold for undisclosed amount in 2020
Oregon’s Day – sold for $1 million in 2019
Secret Agenda – sold for undisclosed amount in 2018
Some of these mares had strong pedigrees of their own and some were blessed with talent but with Mick and Michael never afraid to aim high on capable horses, that won’t be the last of the list.
“Over the years we have had success making a career at stud for colts but the results of some of our fillies and mares is equally as strong,” Mick said.
“Racing is about having fun and winning but a return on investment is always nice and we try and get Black Type for owners where possible.
“There are mares that could have continued racing but I want to see them retire in the best possible condition so they have every chance to be good broodmares.
With Group winners such as Odeum and Quantum Mechanic starting their broodmare journeys this season, we look forward to seeing them continue the great run of our fillies and mares off the track.
