A brilliant ride by apprentice jockey Teo Nugent on Miss Damita saw the lightly raced five-year-old win the $25,000 Mortlake Cup on Saturday.
Miss Damita defeated Tysonic by over three lengths with Barade back in third place in the feature race on the seven-event program.
“Miss Damita was just too good for her opposition,” the former Brauer College student told The Standard.
“I thought she had to be hard to beat after her last start win at Kyneton.
“She had good form for a race like this. I had the perfect run after drawing barrier one.
“I was very confident in the run that I was on the one to beat as she was travelling so well.
“It’s my first local cup win which was extra special because I had family and friends on-course to see Miss Damita win.”
Nugent won the 2018-19 apprentice country jockey of the year award. He rode 70 winners, 59 seconds and 63 thirds from 525 rides on the country circuit last season.
