While the past few seasons have delivered outstanding colts such as Flying ArtieTarzino, Extreme Choice and recent Group 1 winners Mighty Boss and Grunt, it is the fillies and mares that have really stood up this season.

Pedrena (Mossman x Hansom Cab) took out the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes last Saturday at Doomben, marking arguably the stable’s best ever season on individual black-type performances for the fillies and mares.

Pedrena was a $60,000 purchase selected by Mick from the 2015 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale from the draft of Twin Palms, and took her record to 12: 6-3-0 ($407,776) after Saturday’s victory. Tarzino was also purchased from this sale by Mick for $60,000.

With 75 horses in work and approximately half of those colts or geldings, the stable is proud to be punching above its weight. It is pleasing to see that 12 fillies or mares have added valuable black type to their pedigrees in past 12 months.

Of note has been Group 1 winners Hiyaam (Vinery Stud Stakes) and Seabrook (Champagne Stakes) with Group 1 placegetters Oregon’s DaySecret Agenda and Miss Admiration coming so close to success at the highest level.

Mick Price said adding value to fillies and mares was a focus of the stable.

“I love the challenge of training high-quality colts, but we have made a more conscious effort to plan black type races into the programs of fillies and mares where their ability permits.

“Whether they plan to breed or sell, owners and breeders appreciate that we are trying to win races with their horses, but also trying to get black type next to their name as it adds such important residual value.”

The recent Magic Millions Broodmare Sale supports that statement, with black-type performances bolstering the price of mares.

Pedrena will get two more opportunities to add to her resume before the season end, first in the $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) on Saturday 9 June and then in the $500,000 Group 1 Tatts Tiara (1350m) on Saturday 23 June.

The stable will be looking to purchase at the 2018 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale from 5 June – 7 June on the Gold Coast. Keep an eye on purchases here: https://pricekentracing.com.au/horses-available.
